The sword is a melee weapon only available for Light, it can deal high damage with a primary attack, if you hold secondary and releasing will perform a heavy stab that deals very high damage.
It may deal higher damage than the dagger, but dagger does have bonus damage from when attacking the enemy from behind which makes it better than the Sword because dagger can combined with light specialization & gadgets.
