Modern Warfare 2 Camos Overview
To quote from MW2 latest blog: Weapon Camos are cosmetic patterns that cover the majority of each weapon and are earned via "Camo Challenges."
For Modern Warfare 2, All Camos are divided into two part. Part one: Base Camo, and Part two: Mastery Camo. Here's how the camo unlock system work:
Base Camos
These camos didn't restrict to one weapon, once you unlock the camo you can apply them to all weapons.
There are 180+ Base camos spread throughout all weapons in Modern Warfare 2, so each weapon will have their own challenges to unlock their base camo.
Weapon with attachments has four Base camo challenges whereas weapons like RPG have only one.
This is an example of challenges you need to complete to unlock base camo for M4:
1. Get 3 Kills with the M4. Unlocks Camo #1.
2. Get 3 or more Kills with M4 without reloading 3 times to unlock Camo #2. (Challenge unlocked at Weapon level 7.)
3. Get 3 Double Kills with the M4. Unlocks Camo #3. (Challenge unlocked at Weapon level 13.)
4. Get 3 Triple Kills with the M4. Unlocks Camo #4. (Challenge unlocked at its Max Weapon level 20.)
The real amount of Kills are to be expected when the game actually playable.
Complete the base camo then proceed to unlock Mastery Camo for your weapon.
Mastery Camos
In Modern Warfare 2, there are four mastery camos for you to unlock such as Gold, Platinum, Polyatomic, and Orion. Here's how to unlock each camo:
How to unlock Gold Camos
Gold Camo is available to unlock on your weapon once you complete Base camo challenges.
The challenge to unlock Gold Camo in Modern Warfare 2 you need to get a certain number of kills with the weapon without dying a certain number of times.
eg: When you completed base camo challenges for your M4 and you want to go for gold, you need to get two or three kills with M4 without dying to unlock Gold camo.
Keep in mind that Gold Camo is not a universal camo, you need to complete the challenge on the weapon that you want to get gold camo on.
How to unlock Platinum Camos
Platinum Camo is available to unlock once you have unlocked all Gold camos in that Weapon category.
There are 9 weapons categories in Modern Warfare 2:
- Assault Rifles
- Battle Rifles
- SMGs
- LMGs
- Marksman Rifles
- Sniper Rifles
- Sidearms
- Launchers
- Melee (Primary & Secondary)
So If you want to unlock Platinum camo for your assault rifle, you need to first unlocked Gold Camos for every guns in Assault rifle weapon category.
How to unlock Polyatomic Camos
Polyatomic camo is the third mastery camos in Modern Warfare 2 that is available to unlock when you've unlocked Platinum Camos on 51 weapons.
When you manage to unlocked Platinum Camos for 51 weapons you can start completing Polyatomic camos challenge for the weapon you like to have it on.
How to unlock Orion Camos
Orion Camo is the ultimate mastery camo in Modern Warfare 2 which is only available once you have unlocked Polyatomic Camos on 51 weapons.
This is the last grind of Camos in MW2. For future weapon that release during season update, you only need to complete Polyatomic camo to grant Orion camo as well.

3. Unlock all Gold camos in M4 weapon category (Assault Rifles) to unlock Platinum camo challenges.
4. Complete M4 Platinum camo challenges to unlock Platinum camo on M4.
5. Unlock Platinum camo for 51 weapons to unlock Polyatomic camo challenges.
5. Complete M4 Polyatomic camo challenges to unlock Polyatomic camo on M4.
6. Unlock Polyatomic camo for 51 weapons to unlock Orion camo challenges.

Weapon Mastery
In Modern Warfare 2 Weapon's Mastery is an extra grind after you complete Orion camos with extra rewards such as Emblem, Calling Card, and Charm when you completed each weapon mastery.
Here's an example of how you can get the FTAC Recon Weapon charm by completing FTAC Recon weapon mastery:
1. Gold Mastery Challenge: Get 100 Kills with Gold Camo equipped to the FTAC.
2. Platinum Mastery Challenge: Get 200 Kills with Platinum Camo equipped to the FTAC.
3. Polyatomic Mastery Challenge: Get 300 Kills with Polyatomic Camo equipped to the FTAC.
4. Orion Mastery Challenge: Get 400 Kills with Orion Camo equipped to the FTAC.
After you complete these four mastery is when you finally completed the Weapon grind, and you will be rewarded with the Iconic weapon charm that you can only unlock by completing the weapon mastery.
